That is a saucy onion (pose/placement). Indeed it may eventually be in a sauce, tomato perhaps for pasta.

My onions all develop shoots too. And my persimmons go bad before I can eat them because I love their rotund orange sections and soft green leaves too much to do anything but paint them( hint,hint) . Really nice onion, papery skin is tough to do but you make it look easy. But are all your days inside grey ones? On good sunny days, you go out? I want sunlight and strong shadows. Ok, so I'll paint them.
