Depends, it comes with a semi-mat surface (painted) that you can paint directly on - think ice skating! - or you can stick things to it - paper, linen or just re-prime it yourself with acrylic or lead white, but yes if you do that then rub it down with some 'wet and dry paper' to create a fine tooth. I can show you more in October when you're on the workshop.
