“I'm sitting outside a tent above a lake in the Alps at an altitude of nearly 2000ft in a blissfully cool temperature of 16C (perhaps 60F?). It is 11:00 pm. The children (Louis and a friend) are asleep, a distant thunderstorm is providing quite a show, and I have a nice bottle of claret to keep me company. I'm reminded of Robert Genn, who died in 2014 but back in the early days of the internet (late 90s early 2000s) provided a twice weekly newsletter concerning the problems, the joys and the general idiosyncrasies of life as a painter. He would go out plain air painting in his Bentley (or so it seemed). He always used to post from a boat off the Alaskan coast, some high mountain or somewhere similarly exotic. Rains coming, just thinking out loud, tomorrow I hope to get some of this extraordinary landscape into a painting but there are also fish to catch, we'll see which exploit is more successful”
