You may recall Queen Victoria offered a large reward to anyone who could bring her a mangosteen all the way from SE Asia, but no one could. It was just too long a voyage in those days. When I first had one in Singapore, I was disappointed in the flavor, but not in the appearance. They are beautiful, as is you painting!

What a beautifully comfortable still life! There is nothing contrived about this perfect grouping! 2016 is already happy!

This is a perfect painting in all parts. the translucent glow of the clementine, the highlight on the rim of the silver bowl, the cut through bold stroke that describes the circle of the mangosteen, in fact all the beautiful confident slap-happy brushstrokes so wonderful to drool over. Try breaking open the mangosteens next time, that's how its done and you will love the way it looks too.

Painter’s notes

I cut one of the mangosteens in half but it was not as it should be so made do with a clementine
