O yes Evelyn Mahrt, yesterday you were right: Julian paintings are like an autobiography. And this "Bowl of lemons" today is concrete evidence of that fact. The artist here shows us freely his appetite of life: dishevelled brushstrokes (frenzy of life!) on bowl and lemons, but not in the background and foreground, as the couple of Yin-Yang, as the coexistence of haste, eagerness with peacefulness,placation...O Life is so short and so rich too, and too precious that we must not waste a single moment... Highlights on the lemons can be strong but we obscurely feel that they are also precarious and frail and depend on the life span of their support, fruits. Of course, they depend on the electric light, symbol of warm life and of sun, too. At last, inside the right side of the bowl, blue colour has mysteriously disappeared, as if it was covered with ash: precognition of passing; maybe. By the way, the skyline on the right has also totally disappeared. So is there still any hope? That's why my eyes cannot leave the sun-filled lemons at the end: in order to find some reinsurance.
