The background looks so alive, so animated.
It seems there are lots of shadows of faces of men, poor wretches, who are waiting, expecting to eat... O just a smidgeon of red wine and most of all, a little bit of cheese, looking like some radiant gold bar, firm, chalky when you try to cut it, pressed, salted, musky... The Have-nots, reverently, are waiting, like those poor children being amazed by a pre-Christmas window of stuffed toys, in the winter wind. O Spirit of Louis Le Nain you are so close to me tonight! Thanks to you Julian.
I am ga ga over this... I can taste that cheese
and know it well, and I can feel it crumbling off in my hand as I wash it down with a nice
heavy red.... the master of the textures. You
totally nailed all of them in this fine little
gem.
