Turnips! When I grew up in Iraq, they were a favorite street food. They were cooked and sold on carts in the market. They would be boiling in a huge vat with dates added to counter the bitterness and add a wonderful flavor. The aroma was heavenly. They would put them in a bowl and add salt. I never was allowed to eat them in the market (GERMS! my father was a doctor) but we made them at home-not the same though, they lacked the germs!

Painter’s notes

I keep buying these bunches of turnips but they wilt so quickly, this is the first time I've managed to get them into a painting
