This reminds me of looking through the keyhole on a door located on the Aventine Hill in Rome. You can see the dome of the Vatican through it. In this painting the keyhoe effect focuses your eye; then you want to go through the 'door' and see in detail what lies beyond. That is when your imagination comes into play.
I love this. It reminds me of the streets here when they were lined with Elm Trees. In the summer, we could easily escape the heat in their shade. It was like walking in a tunnel. So sad that they are gone now. You've rekindled one of my fondest memories.
