Portrait of Mo (detail)
73cm x 60cm (30"x24") Oil on linen NFSApologies for the unannounced break but we were struck by a violent storm last Wed/Thurs which deprived us of power, telephone lines and destroyed all our internet modems, telephones and fax. It took a week for France Telecom to replace all the burnt out underground cables. Though initially bereft without my internet connection, I finally just settled down and finished this portrait. Mo first came and sat for the portrait on the 31st August (pictures). We did four full afternoons ending on the evening of the storm when, after dinner, Mo and partner drove off into the rain. Little did we know! The portrait is nearly finished though there maybe minor alterations to the face as errors become obvious and I still need to work on the neck and chest. The full version can be seen here: Mo (1480px x 1200px 188kb)

“The portrait is exquisite. Only you know what might need adjusting, but as I read that you planned on working on it some more it reminded me of a time I was doing a watercolor of an older man painting the bottom of his boat. He looked like John Steinbeck, complete with a white beard and yellow oil skins, sea boots. The boat was a small schooner tied alongside a stone pier at low tide and he was rolling on the bottom paint standing under the boat, sun sparkling and reflecting in the wet paint. Anyway he wandered over to where I was sitting and after assessing what I had painted he allowed that I needed an assistant. Oh boy, I thought, here it comes, the art critic is going to tell me what I’m doing wrong. His next comment echoes every time I paint. He said, To take that away from you before you ruin it.”
