Turnips from our Garden

16cm x 12cm (6¼"x4¾"), oil on gessoed card SOLD

These were actually grown by yours truly in our flourishing Square Foot Garden (thanks Gail). Tonight we will be eating Sea Bass (shop bought) with Broccoli Di Rape, grown from seed sourced on our Italian trip of a few weeks (months?) back. For those who follow Ruth's blog, you'll know where all the water that makes this enterprise possible comes from!

Julian, this is absolutely exquisite! Your dinner doesn't sound too shabby, either...

Such a dramatic atmosphere. Fighting the invading darkness, trying to exist, against the insidious Nothingness : it is the desperate bet here... The stalks are going to disappear... A lugubrious atmosphere. Heart-rending. Metaphysical.

Wonderfully daring to leave so much painterly
dark space on one side of the painting.. and
such an intimate "portrait" of your "first grown" Terrific Julian!

Love it. Turnips are such a great-looking vegetable. Too bad they spend most of their days hidden in the ground!

Beautiful classic composition. The purple/violet and the greens makes a stunning color combination.
